Follow Jesus in Baptism

What about Baptism?

Upon profession of faith in the saving work of Jesus, we believe that the next step of obedience is to be baptized.

Baptism - a closer look

Baptism is the outward expression of the inward grace we receive through salvation in Jesus. It is a public declaration that our faith is not private or hidden, but real and life-changing. When a believer is baptized, they identify with Christ — His death, burial, and resurrection — and openly acknowledge Him as Lord. Baptism does not save us; rather, it joyfully proclaims that we have already been saved by grace through faith. It marks the beginning of a new life lived in obedience, gratitude, and commitment to Him.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is Baptism?

Baptism is a public expression of faith in Jesus Christ. It is a meaningful step taken by someone who has chosen to trust and follow Him.

In baptism, we symbolically identify with Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection (Romans 6). As we are lowered into the water, it represents the burial of our old life of sin. When we rise from the water, it reflects the new life we now live through Jesus.

Through Christ we are forgiven, our sins are washed away, and we begin a new life walking with Him in obedience. God also places His Spirit within us to guide and strengthen us. Baptism allows us to express this life-changing reality personally.

In the New Testament, baptism was the natural response of people who placed their faith in Jesus.
When people came to Christ, they believed in Him (Acts 16:31), repented of their sins (Acts 2:38), confessed their faith (Romans 10:9–10), and were baptized (Acts 2:38–41).

Jesus also commanded His followers to baptize those who choose to follow Him (Matthew 28:19–20). For this reason, baptism has always been an important step for believers.

Salvation is made possible only through the grace of God and the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

When someone surrenders their life to Christ, the Bible describes several responses of faith: believing in Jesus, turning from sin, confessing Him as Lord, and being baptized. These actions do not earn salvation, but they express our trust in the One who saves us.

We respond in faith because of what Jesus has already done for us.

The Bible clearly teaches that Jesus alone saves (Acts 4:12).

Baptism itself does not save a person. Instead, it is part of the response of faith that follows when someone places their trust in Christ.

Christians throughout history have sometimes disagreed about the exact moment salvation occurs. Rather than argue over that question, we encourage people to follow the pattern seen in Scripture: believe, repent, confess Christ, and be baptized.

Ultimately, God alone knows the heart (Romans 14:4).

The New Testament was originally written in Greek, and the word used for baptism is baptizo, which means “to immerse” or “to dip.”

Scriptural examples of baptism also point to immersion. For example, when Philip baptized the Ethiopian man in Acts 8:38, they both went down into the water.

Because of the word’s meaning and the examples in the Bible, Life Bridge practices baptism by immersion. It also beautifully represents the picture of burial and resurrection described in Romans 6.

Jesus Himself set the example when John baptized him.

“It should be done, for we must carry out all that God requires.” — Matthew 3:15

If Jesus chose to be baptized in obedience to the Father, baptism is a meaningful step for those who desire to follow Him.
